Spanish Adjective Agreement: gender and number

Short answer

Adjectives match their noun: those ending in -o change to -a, -os and -as; those ending in -e or a consonant change only for number. Most adjectives follow the noun — una casa blanca.

The rule in full

Adjectives copy the gender and number of the noun, and usually follow it.

Adjectives ending in -e or a consonant don't change for gender:

  • un libro interesante / una novela interesante
  • un examen difícil / una tarea difícil

Adjectives of nationality do change: español / española, alemán / alemana.
