Spanish Past Perfect: había hablado

Short answer

The imperfect of haber (había, habías, había, habíamos, habíais, habían) plus the participle. It marks what had already happened before another moment in the past: cuando llegué, ya se habían ido.

The past before another past — English had done.

  • Cuando llegué, la película ya había empezado.
  • Nunca había probado el ceviche.

The participles are the same as in the pretérito perfecto, irregulars included (hecho, dicho, visto, puesto, escrito).
