Le présent de to be (am / is / are)

A1#verbes#to be#présent

Le verbe to be (être) change selon le sujet :

SujetForme
Iam
you / we / theyare
he / she / itis

Forme contractée : I'm, you're, he's, she's, we're, they're.

Négation : I am not, he is not (isn't), they are not (aren't).

Question : on place le verbe avant le sujet : Are you French? Is she happy?

Les articles a / an / the

A1#articles#noms
  • a / an = un, une (indéfini, seulement au singulier).
    • a devant une consonne : a book, a dog.
    • an devant un son voyelle : an apple, an hour.
  • the = le, la, les (défini, une chose précise) : the sun, the house.

Attention : en anglais on n'utilise pas d'article devant un nom pluriel au sens général : I like dogs (J'aime les chiens).

Le pluriel des noms

A1#noms#pluriel

En général on ajoute -s :

  • cat → cats, book → books

On ajoute -es après -s, -ss, -sh, -ch, -x :

  • bus → buses, box → boxes, watch → watches

Certains pluriels sont irréguliers :

  • man → men, woman → women, child → children, foot → feet

Le Present Simple : he / she / it + -s

A1#verbes#présent

Au Present Simple, la troisième personne du singulier (he, she, it) prend un -s final :

  • I work → he works
  • you play → she plays

La négation et la question utilisent do / does + le verbe à la base :

  • I don't like coffee.
  • She doesn't like coffee.
  • Do you speak English?
  • Does he live here?

Note : après does, le verbe revient à sa forme de base (sans -s).

Les adjectifs possessifs (my, your, his...)

A1#possessifs#adjectifs

Ils indiquent à qui appartient une chose. En anglais, ils ne changent pas selon le genre ni le nombre de l'objet possédé :

PersonneAdjectif
Imy
youyour
hehis
sheher
itits
weour
theytheir

Exemple : his car (sa voiture - à lui), her car (sa voiture - à elle).
