Inversion після negative adverbials

Коли речення починається з заперечного або обмежувального прислівника, відбувається інверсія (як у питанні): допоміжне дієслово ставиться перед підметом.

Cleft sentences (it-cleft та what-cleft)

Cleft-конструкції розщеплюють речення, щоб виділити одну його частину.

It-cleft: It was John who broke the vase. (виділяємо John)
What-cleft (pseudo-cleft): What I need is a holiday. (виділяємо the holiday)
All-cleft: All I want is some peace.

Звичайне речення John broke the vase стає нейтральним; cleft додає контраст або фокус, часто спростовуючи попереднє припущення.

Subjunctive та mandative constructions

Після дієслів/прикметників вимоги, пропозиції, важливості вживається base form (інфінітив без to) для всіх осіб — це present subjunctive.

I insist that he be present.
It is essential that she arrive on time.
They demanded that the report be rewritten.

Характерно для American English; у British English часто додають should: that he **should be** present. Зверніть увагу: немає -s у третій особі.

Hedging та модальність у академічному стилі

Hedging — пом'якшення тверджень, щоб уникнути категоричності. Ознака зрілого, точного письма.

Засоби:

модальні: may, might, could, would
дієслова: suggest, appear, tend to, seem
прислівники: arguably, presumably, broadly speaking
кількісники: a tendency, in most cases

Порівняйте: Smoking causes cancer → Smoking may significantly increase the risk of cancer. Друге звучить науково й обережно.

Phrasal verbs та latinate синоніми: register

Англійська має пари phrasal verb (германський, розмовний) vs latinate verb (формальний). Вибір залежить від регістру.
