El subjuntivo with expressions of doubt and emotion

The subjuntivo appears in subordinate clauses after main-clause expressions of doubt, emotion, will, or value judgement, when there are two different subjects.

Key nuances at C1:

Affirming belief takes the indicative: Creo que viene vs. No creo que venga.
El hecho de que almost always takes subjunctive even when the fact is real: El hecho de que lo sepa no cambia nada.

Por vs. para

C1#prepositions

Both translate as for, but they encode different relations.

Por — cause, motive, exchange, duration, means, agent:

Lo hice por ti (motive)
Te lo cambio por este (exchange)
Fue escrito por Borges (agent, passive)

Para — purpose, destination, recipient, deadline, opinion:

Estudio para aprobar (purpose)
Es para ti (recipient)
Lo necesito para el lunes (deadline)

Contrast: trabajo por dinero (because of / in exchange for) vs. trabajo para una empresa (destination/employer).

Indicative vs. subjunctive in relative clauses

The mood in a relative clause depends on whether the antecedent is specific/known (indicative) or non-specific/hypothetical/negated (subjunctive).

Busco un libro que trata de Roma — a specific book that exists.
Busco un libro que trate de Roma — any book of that kind; existence unknown.
No hay nadie que lo sepa — negated antecedent → subjunctive.

This distinction is a frequent C1 discriminator and rarely matters in English, which is why it requires deliberate attention.

Ser vs. estar with adjectives

With adjectives, ser states an inherent/defining quality; estar states a state, condition, or result of change.

Many adjectives shift meaning:

Adjective	ser	estar
listo	clever	ready
rico	wealthy	tasty
aburrido	boring	bored
malo	bad (nature)	ill

At C1, note that estar also conveys a perceived change from the norm: ¡Qué joven estás! implies you look younger than expected, not a permanent trait.

Conditional sentences (si-clauses)

C1#conditionals#subjuntivo

Three core patterns plus the mixed type.

Real/likely: si + present indicative, + future/present/imperative.
- Si tienes tiempo, llámame.
Improbable/hypothetical present: si + imperfect subjunctive, + conditional.
- Si tuviera tiempo, te ayudaría.
Impossible past: si + pluperfect subjunctive, + conditional perfect.
- Si hubiera sabido, habría venido.
Mixed (past condition, present result): Si hubieras estudiado, ahora tendrías el título.

Never use the present subjunctive directly after si.

No matter how much you insist, I'm not going to sign that contract grudgingly.
La medida entraña riesgos considerables y, por ende, conviene estudiarla con detenimiento.
The measure involves considerable risks and, therefore, it should be studied carefully.
Buscan a alguien que domine tres idiomas y que esté dispuesto a viajar con frecuencia.
They're looking for someone who is fluent in three languages and who is willing to travel frequently.
A la postre, lo que parecía un fracaso terminó siendo un hito en su carrera.
In the end, what seemed like a failure turned out to be a milestone in her career.
Me extraña que aún no hayan dado una respuesta rotunda después de tantas semanas.
It surprises me that they still haven't given a categorical answer after so many weeks.
Apenas empezaba a vislumbrar una salida cuando surgió un nuevo quebradero de cabeza.
