Grammar rules

Present Tense of Regular Verbs (-ar, -er, -ir)

A2#verbs#present tense#conjugation

Regular verbs follow predictable endings in the present tense (presente de indicativo).

Pronoun-ar (hablar)-er (comer)-ir (vivir)
yohablocomovivo
hablascomesvives
él/ellahablacomevive
nosotroshablamoscomemosvivimos
vosotroshabláiscoméisvivís
ellos/ellashablancomenviven

Use the present tense to describe habits, current states, and general truths.

Ser vs. Estar (both mean 'to be')

A2#verbs#ser#estar

Spanish has two verbs for 'to be':

  • ser — used for permanent or defining characteristics: identity, nationality, profession, time, origin.

    • Soy estudiante. (I am a student.)
    • Es de México. (She is from Mexico.)
  • estar — used for temporary states, feelings, locations, and ongoing actions.

    • Estoy cansado. (I am tired.)
    • El libro está en la mesa. (The book is on the table.)

A helpful tip: if you can imagine it changing soon, use estar.

Gender and Articles (el/la, un/una)

A2#nouns#gender#articles

Every Spanish noun has a grammatical gender — masculine or feminine.

  • Masculine nouns use el (definite) or un (indefinite): el libro, un chico.
  • Feminine nouns use la (definite) or una (indefinite): la mesa, una chica.

Useful patterns:

  • Nouns ending in -o are usually masculine: el bolso, el tiempo.
  • Nouns ending in -a are usually feminine: la tienda, la semana.
  • Some nouns are exceptions: el día (m), la mano (f).

Adjectives must agree in gender and number with the noun they describe.

Ir + a + Infinitive (Near Future)

A2#verbs#future#ir a

To talk about plans or what is going to happen, use the structure:

ir (conjugated) + a + infinitive

PronounirExample
yovoyVoy a comer. (I am going to eat.)
vasVas a estudiar. (You are going to study.)
él/ellavaVa a llover. (It is going to rain.)
nosotrosvamosVamos a salir. (We are going to go out.)
ellosvanVan a llegar tarde. (They are going to arrive late.)

This is one of the most common ways to express the future in everyday Spanish.

Direct Object Pronouns (me, te, lo, la, nos, los, las)

A2#pronouns#direct object#grammar

Direct object pronouns replace the noun that receives the action of the verb. They are placed before the conjugated verb.

PersonPronounExample
me (1st sg.)meMe llaman Ana. (They call me Ana.)
you (2nd sg.)teTe veo mañana. (I'll see you tomorrow.)

usnosNos ayuda mucho. (It helps us a lot.)
them (m)losLos compro. (I buy them.)
