Grammar rules

Reported speech: backshift dei tempi

B2#reported speech#grammar

Quando riportiamo le parole di qualcuno con un verbo introduttivo al passato (said, told), i tempi verbali "arretrano" di un grado.

Discorso direttoDiscorso indiretto
present simplepast simple
present continuouspast continuous
past simple / present perfectpast perfect
willwould
cancould

Esempio: "I am tired" → She said she was tired.

Attenzione: con say non si usa il complemento di persona, con tell sì. She told me that... / She said that...

Third & mixed conditionals

B2#conditionals#grammar

Il third conditional parla di situazioni irreali del passato:

  • If + past perfect, would have + participio passato.
  • If I had studied, I would have passed the exam.

Il mixed conditional combina passato e presente: una condizione passata con una conseguenza presente.

  • If I had taken that job, I would be richer now.

L'inversione formale è possibile: Had I known, I would have come.

Used to / would / be used to

B2#habits#grammar

Tre strutture facili da confondere:

  • used to + base form → abitudine o stato del passato che non esiste più: I used to smoke.
  • would + base form → solo abitudini ripetute del passato (non per stati): Every summer we would go to the sea. (NON con would i verbi di stato come be, have).
  • be/get used to + -ing/noun → essere/abituarsi a qualcosa: I'm used to working late.

The passive voice e il get-passive

B2#passive#grammar

Il passivo sposta l'attenzione sull'azione o sull'oggetto, non su chi la compie: The bridge was built in 1920.

L'agente si introduce con by solo se rilevante: The novel was written by a teenager.

Nell'inglese informale è comune il get-passive, spesso per eventi negativi o improvvisi:

  • He got fired last week.
  • My phone got stolen.

Verb patterns: gerund vs infinitive

B2#verb patterns#gerund#infinitive

Alcuni verbi cambiano significato secondo ciò che segue:

Verbo+ -ing+ to
rememberricordare un fatto passatoricordarsi di fare
stopsmettere di farefermarsi per fare
tryprovare/sperimentaresforzarsi di

Esempi: I stopped smoking (ho smesso) / I stopped to smoke (mi sono fermato per fumare).

Dopo le preposizioni si usa sempre il gerundio: good at cooking.
