Il Present Perfect vs il Past Simple

B1#verbi#tempi#passato

Entrambi parlano del passato, ma con usi diversi.

  • Past Simple: azione conclusa in un momento preciso del passato (con riferimento temporale: yesterday, last week, in 2010).
    • I saw her yesterday.
  • Present Perfect (have/has + past participle): esperienza, risultato presente o tempo non specificato.
    • I have seen that film. (esperienza)
    • She has just left. (risultato adesso)
MarkerTempo
yesterday, ago, last...Past Simple
ever, never, just, already, yetPresent Perfect

Attenzione: in italiano spesso usi il passato prossimo in entrambi i casi, ma in inglese non puoi dire I have seen her yesterday.

I verbi modali: must, have to, should

B1#verbi#modali

Esprimono obbligo, necessità o consiglio.

  • must = obbligo forte (spesso del parlante): You must stop here.
  • have to = obbligo esterno/regola: I have to wear a uniform at work.
  • should = consiglio: You should rest.

Nella negazione cambia il significato:

  • mustn't = è vietato (You mustn't smoke here.)
  • don't have to = non è necessario (You don't have to come.)

I modali non prendono la -s alla terza persona e sono seguiti dall'infinito senza to (tranne have to).

Il First Conditional

B1#condizionale#futuro

Per situazioni reali o probabili nel futuro.

Struttura: If + present simple, ... will + base verb

  • If it rains, we will stay home.
  • I will call you if I have time.

Regole importanti:

  • Dopo if si usa il presente, mai will: NON If it will rain.
  • Le due parti si possono invertire (la virgola sparisce se if è in mezzo).
  • will si può sostituire con can / may / might per altre sfumature.

Comparativi e superlativi

B1#aggettivi#comparazione

Per confrontare cose o persone.

AggettivoComparativoSuperlativo
short (corto)shorterthe shortest
bigbiggerthe biggest
happyhappierthe happiest
expensive (lungo)more expensivethe most expensive

Irregolari: good → better → the best; bad → worse → the worst.

  • London is bigger than Rome. (con than)
  • This is the most interesting book.
  • as ... as per l'uguaglianza: He is as tall as me.

Used to per le abitudini passate

B1#verbi#passato#abitudini

used to + infinito descrive abitudini o situazioni del passato che ora non sono più vere.

  • I used to play football when I was young. (ma ora non più)
  • There used to be a cinema here.

Forme:

  • Negativa: I didn't use to like coffee.
  • Domanda: Did you use to smoke?

Nota: nella negativa e nella domanda si scrive use to (senza -d), perché l'ausiliare è già did. Equivale all'imperfetto italiano (giocavo, c'era).
