Grammar rules

Present Perfect vs. Simple Past

B1#tempos verbais#passado

Use o Present Perfect (have/has + particípio) para experiências ou ações com ligação ao presente, sem dizer quando. Use o Simple Past para ações terminadas com um momento definido no passado.

Tempo verbalQuando usarExemplo
Present Perfecttempo indefinido, resultado atualI have visited London.
Simple Pastmomento específico no passadoI visited London in 2019.

Palavras típicas:

  • Present Perfect: ever, never, already, yet, just, since, for
  • Simple Past: yesterday, last week, in 2019, ago

First Conditional (condicional real)

B1#condicionais#futuro

Usamos o First Conditional para falar de situações possíveis ou prováveis no futuro.

Estrutura: If + present simple, ... will + verbo

  • If it rains, I will stay home. — Se chover, fico em casa.
  • She will pass the exam if she studies.

Atenção:

  • Depois de if usa-se o presente, nunca will.
  • A ordem das frases pode inverter (sem vírgula quando o if vem no meio).

Comparatives and Superlatives

B1#adjetivos#comparação

Para comparar usamos comparativos e superlativos.

TipoCurto (1 sílaba)Longo (2+ sílabas)
Comparativocheaper thanmore expensive than
Superlativothe cheapestthe most expensive

Irregulares importantes:

  • good → better → the best
  • bad → worse → the worst
  • far → further → the furthest

Adjetivos terminados em -y mudam para -ier/-iest: happy → happier → the happiest.

Modals of obligation: must, have to, should

B1#modais#obrigação

Estes verbos modais expressam diferentes graus de obrigação ou conselho.

  • must = obrigação forte (frequentemente do próprio falante): I must finish this today.
  • have to = obrigação externa (regra, lei): You have to wear a seatbelt.
  • should = conselho ou recomendação: You should see a doctor.

Negativas (cuidado — sentidos diferentes!):

  • mustn't = proibição: You mustn't smoke here.
  • don't have to = não é necessário: You don't have to come.

Used to (hábitos do passado)

B1#passado#hábitos

used to + infinitivo descreve hábitos ou estados do passado que já não acontecem.

  • I used to play football when I was young. — Eu costumava jogar futebol.
  • She used to live in Brazil.

Formas negativa e interrogativa usam did e o infinitivo sem -d:

  • I didn't use to like coffee.
  • Did you use to smoke?

Não confundir com be used to (= estar acostumado a), que é diferente.
